Not all National Parks are created equal. Even though I love every park I’ve been to so far, Cradle Mountain really stands out to me. With great views, lots of wombats and a more-than-usual upbeat vibe from fellow hikers, it really is a must-see in Tasmania.
We’ve started putting together this guide to Cradle Mountain Hikes to help you prep for your own adventure out there. I’m convinced you’ll love it!

The Waldheim Cabins in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park are really a unique way to visit one of the most popular and beautiful parks in Tasmania. There may be fancier, more romantic and more photogenic accommodation down at Pencil Pine, but you really can’t beat this location. The main hiking trails are literally on your doorstep. Plus, since you can simply leave the key inside the cabin when you leave, it’s the perfect place to stay before starting the Overland Track.
The Overland Track, the most famous hiking trail in Tasmania, is situated among the World Heritage Listed rivers, mountains and lakes of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Full of unique wildlife, plenty of side trips to expand the distance traveled and a varying landscape, it’s a trail that will stay with you for many years to come. Especially if you hike the Overland Track in Winter!
